Help me give my students vertical whiteboards! Over a decade of research by Peter Liljedahl shows the power of using "non-permanent vertical writing surfaces" (AKA whiteboards) along with engaging problems & random grouping to accelerate learning in mathematics.

My Students

I have the awesome privilege of working at a school of almost all Black & Brown children. Our school also happens to have a high rate of poverty as measured by the Free & Reduced Price Lunch eligibility rate. While some people might see this as a negative or a challenge to be overcome, I know that our students are some of the brightest, most capable and most resilient learners imaginable. Serving the children that I do is an honor and a privilege that I don't take lightly.

The students that I serve are eager for opportunities to collaborate, think creatively and solve problems.

My job as their teacher is to provide those opportunities in a way that is uniquely tailored to their lived experiences, personalities and abilities, and in a way that advances their understanding and love of mathematics.

My Project

Thinking is not the norm in American mathematics classroom. Most students learn math in an environment where they believe, despite teachers best efforts, that mimicking rather than problem-solving, is expected. Peter Liljedahl's 14 years of research shows us how to flip students' expectation of mimicking and disengagement on its head.

Most of the 14 elements of a "thinking classroom" are free, but the whiteboards are not.

Vertical writing surfaces foster collaboration; students are focused on the math, not on each other (social considerations are especially prominent in middle school!). Vertical surfaces encourage collaboration not just within groups but between groups: everyone's work (including mistakes!) is visible. Non-permanent writing surfaces reduce time to task; with the fear of being wrong removed and also normalized, students are eager to start and eager to try different strategies.
