Thinking is not the norm in American mathematics classroom. Most students learn math in an environment where they believe, despite teachers best efforts, that mimicking rather than problem-solving, is expected. Peter Liljedahl's 14 years of research shows us how to flip students' expectation of mimicking and disengagement on its head. Most of the 14 elements of a "thinking classroom" are free, but the whiteboards are not. Vertical writing surfaces foster collaboration; students are focused on the math, not on each other (social considerations are especially prominent in middle school!). Vertical surfaces encourage collaboration not just within groups but between groups: everyone's work (including mistakes!) is visible. Non-permanent writing surfaces reduce time to task; with the fear of being wrong removed and also normalized, students are eager to start and eager to try different strategies.
