Ms. L from San Francisco CA is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students three of copies of The Poet X, The Fountains of Silence, Five Feet Apart, and Paper Girls Volume 6 in order to love reading more!
I work at a public high school where 96% of our students are of color and 80% of them will be the first in their families to attend college.
Many of my students are falling in love with reading for the very first time.
In my classroom, I have found great success bridging the gap between "fake" reading to an authentic love of reading, using graphic and young adult novels. For many of my students, these genres provide the first step in their journey towards identifying as a "reader."
Because our school library exists solely within a few classrooms, I used to think having a wide variety of books was the key. Soon I realized that my 9th (and now 10th/11th/12th) graders were spending too much time waiting for their peers to finish the most popular titles. That's when I had an epiphany: less selection with more access is better than more selection with less access. The whole point is to get students reading what they want to read, as efficiently as possible.
I'm asking for three copies of four excellent books: The Poet X, The Fountains of Silence, Five Feet Apart, and Paper Girls Volume 6. By devoting part of the curriculum to independent reading, students can choose what they read instead of having a teacher assign them a book. I have witnessed a reading resurgence with this idea. I'm excited about this new approach, and so are my students.
My students have already begun to reclaim their love of reading, and they're ready to take the next step.
Reading has re-introduced my students to the power of story. My students have more empathy now because they take on the lives and struggles of the characters in their books. My students also have more calm now because of the mindfulness necessary to leave their world to enter another. Most of all, my students are more independent now because they understand that stories and texts can help them find answers on their own.
I am hopeful that you can contribute to building our classroom library, book by book. When we're done, it's going to be a robust one: each title will have three copies instead of one! Thank you so much for your generous donation.
