Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our extended day students are preschool children ages three-to-five years of age from two elementary schools. These students have been diagnosed with autism. Eighty-eight percent of the students enrolled at these two schools receive free or reduced-price lunch. In an extended day, students are taught outside of their regular classroom by both a certificated teacher and a para-educator in a one-to-one or small group setting.
The benefits of this program are validated by research that concludes that early intervention for children with a diagnosis of autism improves long-term outcomes.
Specifically, in preschool, this is an effective model that supports learning early on by teaching them discrete skills that they need in order to improve their ability to participate in their regular classroom environment and in their home or community.
My Project
For the last few years I have been working towards becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Unfortunately, I was unable to finish my certification last year due to the COVID-19 outbreak and school not being in session. However now that we have moved into distance learning, if this project is funded, I can complete my last period of supervision. The research is clear that early intervention in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is effective for the treatment of autism. However, for these treatments to be effective, they need to be implemented by a trained professional. Please help me cover the cost of supervision so that I can become a BCAB and improve outcomes for my students.
