Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third grade teacher in East New York. I teach in P.S. 345 located in Brooklyn. About 98% of our children in this school receive free lunch. This means that they come from a home whose income is below poverty.
Many of the students in our school are far below level. My students are eager to learn and highly motivated. Unfortunately, many of my students lack basic resources at home.
At the present time about 40% of my students have a learning disability. They are sweet children who despite their disability want to learn.
My primary goal is to create an inviting, hands-on learning environment where the students can feel, touch and manipulate objects as they learn. I would like to create a math center full of a variety of manipulatives that will aid the children in learning to count, sort, sequence, measure, add, subtract, and tell time. Children require more than just worksheets to learn. Most of these children have very little at home and look forward to coming to school every day eager to see what they will be doing that day.
Lakeshore offers games that are educational in which my students can learn and have fun at the same time. These manipulatives will reinforce the skills I teach in class.
I am confident that the activities and group-work our class could do with the proper manipulatives will allow for critical math skills building. Your support would change the dynamic of our classroom learning in math in such a dramatic way.
