Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Children with special needs require the use of engaging hands-on manipulative's to spark their interest in learning. These counting and number sense manipulative's are just what they need to gain an understanding of Kindergarten mathematical standards and to make math count!
My students are Kindergarteners with mild to moderate learning disabilities.
They are interested in learning, enjoy coming to school, and always try their best. I love being a Kindergarten teacher, as Kindergarten is such a fun time in school for a child because they are generally happy to be in school, learning and interacting with friends. I want to provide the best learning experience possible for them so they want to continue to participate in school and become life-long learners. I have high expectations for my students and believe given the right learning environment with engaging, hands-on learning opportunities, all children can learn regardless of their disability. It's so rewarding to see how much they grow academically and socially from the beginning to the end of the school year. My school is a K-5 elementary school where majority the students are economically disadvantaged.
My Project
Providing fun and engaging hands-on learning opportunities, combined with music and movement are a part of the daily routine in my Kindergarten Special Day class. My students have a very limited attention span, therefore require short curriculum-based learning activities that provide access to common core standards. At times, it can be very challenging to keep them engaged, yet learning the material required, when you don't have the appropriate tools to provide access to the curriculum. Math is a core subject that benefits from the use of hands-on materials. These mathematics counting and number sense materials will allow them to further gain access and understanding of the math standards and their IEP goals. I will use them on a daily basis in small group rotations to reinforce counting and number recognition/number writing, as my students require daily practice of these skills to succeed.
The donations of these math manipulative's will increase student participation and make math time much more fun!
Most importantly, they will provide the necessary tools, as well as sense confidence in their math abilities by sparking a greater interest in counting and number recognition activities.
