Help Make it a Clean and Colorful Kindergarten Classroom
My students need 9 kinds of basic supplies including a box of small and big crayons, markers, colored pencils, cleaning wipes, rubber cement, and overhead pens.
What time do you get up in the morning? Well, many of my five-year-old students have to get up at 5:30am every morning in order to rider the bus for over and hour to get to school on time. I teach kindergarten in New Mexico, and most of my students live on the Navajo Reservation and take the bus into town to come to school each day. Our school has 95% of students on a free or reduced lunch program due to the level of poverty in the surrounding community and on the reservation.
Some of my students do not have electricity or running water at home and we need some basic supplies to make our classroom colorful and clean. I want to help my students to learn to love school by encouraging learning through creativity and expression, but I need the supplies to give my students so that they can create masterpieces to decorate the classroom, school, and their homes. Right now I have about ten boxes of old crayons that I bought with my own money at the beginning of the year for my entire class to share. Most of the crayons are broken, and many are missing. We have no markers or pencils, so they do everything (writing and coloring) with these old crayons. They are not learning how to write or color with pencils or markers.
As their teacher I desperately need some antibacterial wet wipes to keep my classroom clean and germ-free for my students. I can keep a clean classroom, and therefore keep my student healthy and able to come to school. Especially during the winter, it is important that they are able to stay healthy and keep good attendance.
With these basic supplies like crayons, markers, and pencils, my students will be able to take pride in their work and education. The students will start to build confidence and creativity through their expression. This pride in their work and ability starts in kindergarten, but can guide them through the rest of their educational career.
These are simple little things that will make a world of difference to my amazing and creative kids. With these supplies the students will be able to make pictures and projects that will brighten their lives in a way they can remember forever. And I will be able to keep them healthy and happy!
