Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my students help their community during these trying times!

I teach English as a Second Language to recently immigrated high school students in urban California.

The majority of our students come from impoverished backgrounds and they have families that are fighting for their success. While my students come from very diverse backgrounds, ranging from Latin America to Korea, they all share the same common experience of being second language learners. As a small school, we have made every sacrifice to serve the needs of our students but in these dire economic times, this has come with great difficulty.

My Project

The voice recorders will allow my students to venture out into their communities and access crucial resources by documenting their work. Many of my students came to our school with various emotional dilemmas and resources were not available to help them cope with their situations due to limited financial resources or lack of knowledge of issues regarding teenage emotional problems. Via this project, my students will search for, interview, and find ways to access resources in their community that will help both students and parents at our school deal with emotional/psychological distress. Before we begin the project, my students will be reading the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, which largely addresses the issue of teen depression. Through this project, my students will be able to make connections between the content and their everyday worlds, as well as engage in authentic dialogue regarding issues affecting their communities.

Please help my students gain access to these community resources by supporting this project.

During these times of economic instability it is often the most marginalized of communities that loose access. Please help us prevent this reality and give our students an opportunity to engage is true civic improvement.
