Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a full-time science teacher for my school and I see 19 classes a week and over 350 students. The materials you buy will be used every day, all day! It's a great way to really support science. Students love magnets and electricity, these materials will be highly motivating as learning tools.
We are located in the inner city of San Diego.
Many of my students don't speak English at home and have either Spanish or Vietnamese as their primary languages. It is really hard to teach students who have various levels of English proficiency. These students need hands on materials to help them build their vocabulary by creating hands on experiences that can deepen their understanding of the world. It is my job to then connect their experiences with new vocabulary and language. My students love coming to science, as they know they are going to get to work with their hands and discover how the world works. Magnets are always a favorite for students of all ages!
My Project
With the new magnets students of all ages will be able to explore with magnets. Through explore time students will be able to really see what magnets do in many different situations, with magnets of different sizes and colors. These different experiences will allow students to deepen their understandings of magnets, learning new vocabulary as well as building their oral language as they share their experiences with the various magnets.
The electricity kits will allow students to work with their hands and think critically at the same time. They will have to try different ways to hook up the wires, lights and batteries to make the lights work. They will have to figure out what is happening to make the light work and why it might possibly not be working. These kits will allow students to practice working together to solve problems. They will use their oral language to communicate their ideas with their partners, so that they can get the lights to shine!
By providing new materials, I will be able to provide students with new experiences.
These experiences aren't possible right now, as I don't have the correct or right amount of materials. With your generous donations I will be able to provide new and meaningful experiences to my students who are faced with so many struggles. This will allow them more opportunities to engage in their learning at a level that meets their needs at their own level. Thank you!
