I teach at an elementary school at one of the neediest schools in all of southern California. My school ranks in the top 5 for poorest children. I help 4th grade students become proficient readers as well as thinkers and hopefully instill in them how to be good people. Many of these students come from challenging home lives and face many struggles before they even get to school. Almost all my students are English language learners and when they arrive in school in kindergarten don't speak much English at all. This challenge is extremely hard to overcome when they continue to speak their native language at home each night. Despite these challenges, the students at my school are amazing. They want to learn and try very hard to succeed despite the many obstacles they face.
