This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In kindergarten so far this year, we have been learning about toys and play. We have taken our exploration everywhere! We have played hands-on, at a distance, of course. We have discovered the toys we prefer. We have even become scientists discovering how toys move with friction, inertia, and gravity.
Detroit Prep is an intentionally diverse, charter school located on the east side of Detroit that specializes in social-emotional education and learning through the power of play.
Students come from all different backgrounds, cultures, and socioeconomic statuses. More than half of students are from low-income homes and qualify for free or reduced price lunch.
We decided to survey our entire school by asking them which toys they prefer so we can give Detroit Prep the gift of play with this project!
My Project
The following are some direct quotes from students as to why it is important for them to be able to give this gift to their school. To answer this question, students drew upon their learning in the expedition, their knowledge of our school's five habits of character: compassion, integrity, perseverance, cooperation, and curiosity and creativity, and their knowledge of feelings (how they want to feel and make others feel in our crew).
Students will use the portable basketball hoop, bean bag toss, Play-Doh, and other items during both indoor and outdoor recess.
My students will use the balls in a fitness class to build balance and fine motor skills, they will use them for imaginative play and help foster friendship and teamwork among each other.
