This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Bruises and Fevers and Flu, Oh My! The school nurse's office is a very busy place. Sore throats, ear infections, and fevers are just a few of the illnesses that I see as a school nurse on a daily basis.

Did you know that an upper respiratory infection (a cold) is the most common illness in the United States?

The average school- aged child contracts 6 to 12 colds a year. that sure makes for a lot of visits to the nurse's office. I am a certified school nurse who works at a large, urban, public school where 94% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Most of the families at my school do not have a family doctor that they can rely on when their children are sick. They seek medical advice from the school nurse. The school nurse may be the only medical professional they encounter during their child's illness. As the school nurse, I need the proper equipment to assess the health status of these sick students, so that my parents will know when a doctor's visit will be necessary.

My Project

Our school district has been hard hit by budget cuts. There is no money in the budget for first aid supplies. I do not have the tools that are necessay to asses my students' health. I am asking for a good quality thermometer that will allow me the ability to more adequately determine if my students have a fever, and need to go home. The quicker an illness is treated, the sooner my students will be back to good health and ready to continue with their studies! I am also asking for some bandages to clean up the cuts and bruises that happen frequently during recess.
