My students come from a small low-income rural community. Many of these students have big dreams and goals, but do not have access to the resources needed to ensure their own success.
Even though it could be said that my students are at a disadvantage, many of them work incredibly hard to make up for what they lack.
My students are smart, creative, and funny. They excel when given hands on projects that reflect their interests. This past semester, I challenged my students to turn one of the tales told in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales into a modern rap song. My students worked harder than I predicted and turned in projects that exceeded my expectations. This was especially rewarding because these projects were recorded and filmed using only cellphones and my students overcame many technology-based issues throughout the project's duration.
My Project
Most of the students in my classroom do not have access to computers or internet at home. Our school only has two computer labs, which makes it extremely difficult for teachers to plan activities that are technology based. This means that many of my students lack skills that are required for college, such as the ability to research using Internet databases. In addition, many of my students struggle to find the time to complete college applications because they do not have access to online applications.
By choosing to donate to this project, you will be giving my classroom five tablets that students can use for completing technology based group projects, researching for academic papers, and applying to colleges.
