Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Children are the world's most important people."

Our school is particularly unique in the sense that it is highly diverse, ethnically, religiously, socioeconomically, as well as a huge range of ability levels (physical and intellectual).

This has led to a school culture that focuses on acceptance, one that truly honors the richness our unique community has to offer. My school is also a Title I school. This means that 75% or more of our students participate in​ the free and reduced-price lunch program. My students are some of the most exciting kids I have met. They are eager to learn new things and excited to learn with one another. They are extremely creative thinkers, have questions about everything, and want to express themselves. Their families and the general school community are also an important part of my classroom. The partnerships I have formed with them had helped to enhance the classroom and school experience for all stakeholders.

My Project

This year, I have started a book club with a group of some of the families in my class. We meet every other week to discuss readings that relate to teaching and parenting. We recently finished our first book, How to Raise a Reader, and are looking to continue the book club with a new pick.

The book club has become a truly special place where we learn from one another and have formed a community bond that extends past the classroom walls.

The Whole-Brain Child is a book that most families mentioned an interest in reading. Rooted in neuroscience, this book really focuses on ways to help adults and students become emotionally healthy humans! Funding this project will help keep our book club going and in turn, directly our students and their well-being.
