The school I work at is a Title 1 school amidst a sea of apartments in the middle of Los Angeles. My school is particularly unique in that it is an incredibly diverse school in all aspects; socioeconomically, racially, religiously, etc. Many of the students come from immigrant families and speak multiple languages. In my class of 23 last year, 8 different languages were spoken! This creates for an exciting class structure. Students are enthusiastic to learn, and are considerate of one another. We do a lot of group work and team building, which allows for my students to have a very strong sense of community. They are also given a lot of choice in their learning, and as a result hold themselves more accountable, and are able to take more risks. We work hard on creating a safe space where students can take these risks, and allow themselves to learn from one another. First graders are capable of so much more when you give them the trust and respect that they deserve!
