Help Build Stamina for Literacy

My students need the book boxes and whisper phones for Just Right Books. My students need composition books for writing activities Students need CD to listen to books.

My Students

Students in first grade are very energetic and I need help getting my students to work independently while I meet with small groups during reading. My goal is to have students build enough stamina during centers that we can achieve our goals of becoming independent workers

First grade is the year where students learn many new important concepts including counting by twos, fives, and tens, adding, subtracting, and also the vital concepts and skills needed to learn how to read.

Everyone learns at different rates and grasps concepts at different levels. One of the biggest struggles in a first grade classroom is differentiating reading instruction to meet the needs of all the students. In first grade, there are students at each end of the reading spectrum. Ranging from reading above grade level independently, to students who struggle with identifying their letter sounds. Reading is the foundation of a meaningful education (Marchand-Martella, Martella, Nelson, Waterbury, Shelley, Cleanthous & Hatfield, 2002, p.118). When we move to our new building we will be adding more than 300 new students due to a merger. The school will have a bigger ELL population. Getting the Daily Five up and running will help all students including my ELL population.

My Project

The Daily Five is a student driven management structure designed to fully engage students in reading and writing. There are five different components to the Daily Five: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Work on Writing. The book boxes would allow students to have just right books ready to go when they Read to Self or Read to Someone. The WhisperPhones would work well with Read to Self to help students work on their accuracy and fluency. The journals will be used for students during Word Work and also Work on Writing. Students will have a collection by the end of the year and see their growth.

The Daily Five is designed to teach students to build their stamina and independence in each of the Daily Five tasks so they can fully engage in meaningful, authentic reading and writing for an extended time.

If students are fully engaged in their reading or writing, I would be able to focus my attention on my Guided Reading group instead of managing the students that run out of stamina.
