Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach mostly SEI/ELD and low-income students in an economically challenged neighborhood. These students come from very diverse backgrounds, move often, and have faced many hardships that go along with poverty.

Despite their struggles, my students have a positive attitude for their futures.

Many of them have hopes of going to college, and have already focused on possible career paths.

My students recognize that hard work pays off. These students have been leaders in growth and test scores throughout the district for the past two years in both ELA and math.

My Project

My students are never able to find books they are interested in when we go to the library. We have a need for high-interest books at multiple levels to hit the needs of my students, especially my ESL population.

We saw a need for change, and we made a list of all the books that I am requesting.

My students came up with the titles, created an online voting tool, and all students voted on the books we would want most for our library.

My students want to read, but they do not have access to books they will truly enjoy. Building a classroom library is the answer.
