Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a middle school in a low-income urban district that has a very small budget compared to the size of our student population. I have had the privilege of teaching the honor classes these last few years (one of which is brand new to our school- algebra-based physics; a high school level class in middle school). My students are motivated, responsible, and eager to learn and achieve high grades.
I love these qualities in my children, especially because many of them come from disadvantaged homes and are struggling to overcome many obstacles thrown their way.
And, I find it overwhelmingly encouraging that they are able to do this with the consistency and rigor needed to do well in today's academic world.
My Project
Teaching in an urban setting, many of our students' abilities are one or more grades levels behind where they should be. Our school is piloting a new intervention program which allows students to work on the skills they are lacking so they can reach their current grade level, score higher on standardized tests, and improve their chances of getting into a great college!
My school just started an awesome WIN Program (what I need) this year.
Although my class has Chromebooks for individual student use, we are lacking enough headphones for each student to work individually without interrupting each other. Having these will allow students to work at their pace, thus personalizing each students experience.
