Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many students at my school are disengaged or become disengaged learners. The change in the atmosphere combined with the impact of their home lives causes this disengagement, which leads to attendance concerns and class failures. In our high school, failing a class means you have to retake it before you can graduate, which causes those students to drop out by 11th grade.
Our school is an inner city school where many students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and several of these students become disengaged leading to misbehavior, suspensions, lack of attendance, and class failures; last year 11% of my 9th-grade students failed English due to disengagement.
To help combat disengagement, I started a club at my school called VGHS (Video Game High School). The club explores production of web-based content (reviews, podcasts, and videos) using the topic of video games. Student interest in this club has created a community, causing more students to attend school. It also has motivated them to pass their classes and has created some school pride. It has become a very popular community in the school.
My Project
My High School tech club can no longer create and edit videos because the club's MacBook is broken and beyond repair. The club has been very successful in giving students a purpose for coming to school and wanting to pass their classes, and a community has been formed due to the foundation of this tech club. There are also several educational aspects to the club: public speaking, Applied Science, Engineering, and Programming, video editing and production. All are made possible due to programs and learning opportunities on a MacBook the students were sharing and utilizing. We also used the MacBook to capture video footage from games the students wanted to produce content on.
Losing our MacBook has been a major setback, and with the lack of funding, we are unable to purchase a new one, meaning we can no longer utilize the technology that made our club successful.
Using a new MacBook, the tech club will be back to full strength. We will be able to utilize a capture program to capture video from games, movies, and other content. Then, utilizing iMovie, we edit, add commentary, images, intros/outros, and produce videos and Podcasts which are uploaded to the school's YouTube channel. Students who are in the club express great pride in making the videos, and students who are not in the club look forward to making the videos. As a result, this club has become very popular, and student disengagement in the school has decreased, while a sense of community has increased. Students are also learning advanced technology skills for college and career readiness. With your generosity and help, our club and our community can thrive again!
