My students come from some very tough situations and have some very dark stories to tell. Seldom are they given the opportunity to tell their own stories, let alone get them published. Through the lessons learned in my English class, students realize that they are not the only ones that have tough situations. When they are given the opportunity to share their own stories, other students and teachers are brought closer to each other, and teachers gain a deeper understanding as to what drives student behavior.
