Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first-graders are an eager, enthusiastic, and intelligent group of students. Over the past three months we have been able to create a family of learners who enjoy coming to school even if it has been 100 percent virtual from day one. We are able to learn, dance, socialize, draw and even have lunch together. We have truly become a family.
First graders are ready to make the incredible leap of becoming readers and writers!
However, many of my students are having difficulty with learning from home. They live in small homes that are often quite noisy. This makes it extremely difficult to hear the lessons being taught.
My Project
My students are learning virtually from home. Although they are enthusiastic learners they are having a difficult time hearing the lessons being taught. Often times, they are unable to focus because of the noise level, the activity going on around them, and even the sound of other teachers instructing their siblings. In order to become good readers and writers my students must master phonemic awareness (being able to hear, recognize and manipulate the sounds of the alphabet). This is sometimes nearly impossible to do because of the noise level. The problem is compounded because my students are in a Dual Language Program trying to master the sounds in two languages!
