Hearing Can Be Reading--and Hearing Better Is Reading Better!

Help me give my students noise-canceling headphones to help them access greater reading opportunities.

My Students

"I actually like school this year!" This student's comment was passed on to me by the parent of one of my dry-humored seventh-graders. It typifies the at-once too-cool-to-learn and yet eager-to-show-they-can attitude that many of my "learning-disabled" middle schoolers display. Consider compounding the awkwardness of middle school with having some kind of disability that makes school more difficult, oftentimes not just academically but socially as well. And yet, my sixth- and seventh-graders engage with enthusiasm and perseverance, day after day.

In spite of having faced challenges throughout their academic lives, my students believe they can learn and take pride in their success.

I love highlighting their strengths and affirming their growth and accomplishment. They, in turn, dig deep to try yet again, learning reading or math skills that do not come easily to them--then demonstrate delight when the "Aha!" moment comes.

Social belonging and finding friendships are supremely important to these young people. And in that search I am touched by their kindness and compassion in supporting and building one another. Too, they share and develop their budding sense of humor and give a glimpse of their "real" personalities, allowing me to teach not just math and reading, but THEM.

My Project

In our intensive reading classes, I often need to work with individual students or smaller-than-class-size groups while other students work independently. An excellent assignment to give in these circumstances is an audio or text-to-speech version of a book or other text. Because my students' low reading levels do not match their age and interest levels, it is more motivating for them to listen to audio reading material that is above their actual visual reading level. This exposes them to a wider variety of literature, higher-level vocabulary, and the opportunity of hearing pronunciation and prosody while following along a written copy.

Good quality headphones are key to the success of audio book/text assignments, and noise-canceling headphones can help students become much more deeply engaged and connected to what is happening or being taught in the text.

My students tend to be easily distracted; these headphones will go a long way in minimizing ambient noise that can be so very distracting. High-quality sound production will allow my students to hear clearly the narration, the words, and how they are spoken.

I envision my students reading and listening to articles and books while I work with selected students more intensively and assess progress. I can also circulate among students who are able to access more individualized, and therefore more motivating, reading assignments, stopping to have mini-discussions and pose questions in an informal, non-threatening, one-to-one way. This will allow for greater progress in reading comprehension, which is the real reason for reading in the first place!
