My Students

My students are a very special group of children. Together with my wonderful paraprofessionals; we are the Life Skills classroom on our elementary campus. Our children are from a variety of backgrounds. Many parts of our neighborhoods struggle, especially now. All of my students have survived Hurricane Harvey. Some of their families fared well, while others lost everything.

I passionately believe that all students have purpose and all have the ability to learn, including mine.

They can make a difference.

My Project

Two-thirds of my students are autistic. Just like other children; they have strong dislikes and preferences regarding foods that they eat. Unfortunately; their preferences are often limited. So many factors determine their choices: flavor, texture, and smell. Any one of these factors may act as a deterrent in whether that child will eat any of the school lunch provided. This directly affects their ability to focus and perform.

As a teacher, I am more concerned about my autistic children having healthy snacks that they will eat and be able to perform academically versus pushing them to "clean their plate".
