My Students

Do you remember a time when you felt nervous or anxious about being with a bunch of strangers? My students feel this way every day! With their social and learning challenges, eating together is a great way to practice social skills with each other.

Our students come from a large metropolitan public middle school.

Students I case manage have multiple disabilities in the cognitive, emotional, communicative, and social realms. They love it when we bring in basic ingredients and put together a makeshift lunch to share with each other. But we don't have any way to cook or keep food fresh and cool.

My Project

Typically, my students feel uncomfortable with large groups, especially in a cafeteria with 900 other kids! Cooking club, or just eating together, or bringing in typical developing peers to assist with lunch activities, are all great ways for my students to get to know each other and converse in a group. Many of my students have food sensitivities, including allergies to peanuts, dairy, gluten, most sugars, citrus, and certain dyes. Although they have limited diets, they eat very healthy snacks and lunches. We want to have the appliances in our own room to keep food fresh, as well as have the opportunity to have lunch clubs. With some of the disabilities my students have, they cannot be left for one second to go to the staff lounge, which has its own improvement needs. My students need a compact refrigerator and a microwave.

Having our own appliances would give my students and their peers the flexibility to have lunch with peers in a safe, small setting, to plan group lunch events with general ed peers, to organize making simple recipes to share with others, and to clean up after all the fun.
