My students need noise-canceling headphones so that they can all work independently on individual computers to develop the independent thinking and technical skills they'll need in the years to come!
I teach 5th grade at a small, well-performing, elementary school. My students are keen learners, and active participants in classroom discussions. They are engaged, motivated, and enthusiastic about school. They work hard and are hungry for knowledge.
They are preparing to enter middle school next year, and need to work on some of their independent working and thinking skills to prepare for that transition.
In elementary school, as their teacher, I cover all subjects with them and know them all well. We do lots of group learning and projects, and I am around to assist when issues arise and to keep them going. My students also work independently, but in our crowded classroom, it is not always "solo." As they get older and move through middle school, high school, college, and life, teamwork skills will of course be essential. But my students will also need to be able to work individually -- have ideas, read and learn, type papers, and get things done themselves! Before they leave elementary school for good, I'd love to give them the chance to further develop those skills too.
My Project
Our classroom wasn't built to hold the number of students it must each year. When we are working in class, it can feel crowded and get very noisy. It can be hard to think and work. We are fortunate to have rotating access to computers that my students can use for research and writing, math development, and diving deeper into history and science.
Individual headphones will make it possible for my students to stay focused and work more effectively in our crowded classroom!
Without headphones, it can be hard to hear a tutorial, concentrate while reading, or understand directions of an activity. It can also be hard to think of what to say and write or to stay on track. Headphones will block all the distractions from my students and enable them to focus solely on the task at hand, and develop their individual thinking and working skills. They'll be able to hear the directions and think in peace. In the quiet classroom, I'll be more able to identify and assist students who need help. Finally, fifth graders also do a lot of testing, and headphones will help us concentrate and be more successful test takers.
