Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Since I was a student I have always heard comments like "I hate math", "Math is so boring" and "Math is the hardest subject on earth" so I have committed myself to change the perspective of students about Math through interactive games and activities.

My students live in the state of California, 99% of the students are Hispanic.

They come from families that are dysfunctional, they have never been hiking. Although they live 20 minutes away from the beach, half of the students haven't been to it. They attend a Title 1 school which means that many of the students live in poverty. Their state testing score in mathematics is below basic or far below basic for at least 55% of the students. They are currently in 8th grade and about 40% of them are still having problems adding and subtracting whole numbers. They have experience failure for most of their math classes and have little interests in the subject.

My Project

My students need a printer/copier and lamination paper to create interactive games to practice the skills learned. The resources that I'm asking for would greatly benefit my students to meet my objective to change the perspective of students about math and to help them be successful in their future studies. I have subscribe to NCTM, which is a journal for teachers that teach mathematics. This journal has various fun activities with handouts that I can use with my students. However, I have limited access to copies at my school, with a copy machine I would be able to make more copies to have my students work on interactive activities. I currently own a laminating machine, but I don't have the laminating paper. I use this machine to create card games to have my students play in pairs or groups to practice the games I create as oppose to just have them work on worksheets. The students would have fun while practicing the skills in math and will be more inspire to do the work.

Your donation would make a difference because my students will have fun and enjoy their math class.

Students that are successful in middle school in their math class are more likely to succeed in high school as well. Having the students work in in groups can help them to develop social skills that will help them in their future career.
