Have You Heard the Side of the Baby Daddy?

My students need 30 copies of, "The First Part Last" to hear the rarely heard perspective of the teen father in a book that challenges every reader to evaluate their perception of teen parenting.

My Students

I challenged my students to craft an essay about lowering the driving age to 14. I was knocked speechless to read a student's argument that most 14 year olds don't have children but many 16 year olds do. We must have serious conversation about teen parenting. This is the book to do it with.

I teach 7th and 8th grade in a dying urban city in Indiana.

Our city is bleak, unemployment and addiction are as common as stoplights and it is a daily battle to convince our students of the possibilities that lay before them. Currently, we have a very pregnant 10th grader walking the halls. To her credit, she is fighting to stay in school and is in the top 10% of her class. Our students are aunts and uncles to the young children of both their older and younger siblings. Our school is flooded with collegiate flags, banners, names, and information about colleges around the country. We take our students on college visits. But teen pregnancy is missing from our conversations about our futures and our standards and dreams.

My Project

This grant asks for 30 copies of the book First Part Last. A concise, easy to read novel, The First Part Last offers the unusual perspective of the teen father of an infant. It details the very raw struggles of a teen parent: nights of no sleep, finding affordable, trustworthy child care, working to stay in school, doubting decisions and capabilities, and the truth about being a single parent. The baby's mother isn't in the picture for reasons withheld until the very end of the story, an author's decision that strikes a mighty, unexpected blow. The teen father's voice is often unheard. Studying this book opens the door to stark talks about the vast responsibilities of parenthood, not to mention single, teen parenthood. My students need this text to have critical conversations and to glimpse the realities of their potential choices.

If we are to truly speak to the endless possibilities that exist for our teenagers, it is our responsibility to also speak to those possibilities most educators consider reckless or irresponsible.

Rather than judging those decisions, this grant opens a door to necessary conversations that may shape the very futures we so hope to impact.
