I have the good fortune to go to work each day with a bunch of spirited, curious 6th graders and 7th grade students in the special education program at an amazing magnet school in Chicago. Our students walk to our school in their community, coming each day to devour books and ask questions that challenge the thinking of their teachers and peers. Each day, they bring their best to our classroom and deserve the best resources and opportunities I can bring them. This year, our struggling urban school district has been hit with debilitating budget cuts. In an effort to lose no more than 3 teacher positions, funding for our community arts programs was eliminated along with many of the other much loved and much celebrated programs our school offers. The dedicated teachers of our school are doing all the can to continue giving our students the best opportunities possible.
