Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Did you see that? That's so cool!" is a phrase I love hearing middle school students proclaim as they work on a hands-on science activity. My passion is to engage students in science activities that model complex concepts that enable them to make connections to events going on in the real world.
My students remember the concepts better when they can attach it to an experience.
Our charter school serves over 200 seventh and eighth-grade students from all over the Escondido area outside the greater city of San Diego. They come from all backgrounds and home environments, but what makes them extra special is their excitement for learning and the involvement of their parents in their educational journey. We offer a blended program of in-class instruction and personalized learning at home. Our staff is passionate about providing the best education possible for students to become successful thinkers, communicators, and achievers.
My Project
We will use the sheep hearts and dissecting equipment to explore the cardiovascular system. After studying on paper and computer simulations, students will examine a real heart.
Students will get a deeper understanding of body systems with this hands-on activity.
There is no substitute for examining, probing, touching a real heart. As we all know from our own middle school experiences, this is an activity the students will always remember. It is gratifying to watch students who wanted no part of dissecting anything be overcome by their curiosity and wonder. I hope they will gain confidence and become more curious as they participate in this activity.
