Young adults with disabilities face many challenges as they prepare to transition into the work world. My students need and benefit from school-based opportunities that prepare them to be productive citizens.
My students are high school aged young people diagnosed with cognitive disabilities.
They receive their public school education in a North Carolina diploma track program called "Occupational Course of Study." OCS is a academic/vocational program that allows students to access an educational curriculum that prepares them for work. One diploma requirement is that they complete 300 hours of school based employment during their time in high school. I serve students who attend a Title I school that is designated as a alternative placement. My students are assigned to attend our school for up to 180 days. These young people often struggle academically in math & reading and feel hopeless about their futures. The bright spot in their day is participating in "hands-on" activities through a school based enterprise. They are excited about studying entrepreneurship and setting up the "Hav-A-Java" Coffee Club.
The requested supplies are the start-up materials our students need to implement the "Hav-A-Java" Coffee Club. Classroom instruction will focus on planning, organizing, managing, and financing a small business. This activity is a laboratory where students can apply the classroom knowledge they learn to a real-life setting. Our focus is to provide entrepreneurship education that prepares young people with disabilities to be responsible, enterprising individuals. Our hope is that they become entrepreneurs or entrepreneurial thinkers who contribute to economic development and sustainable communities. Our students' disabilities are NOT a hindrance to them living a productive life. However, their disabilities often hinder their access to jobs that will pay them a living wage. This activity provides them with "on the job training" that helps them develop appropriate work skills.
Your donation will make a difference in the lives of our students.
By giving, you make both tangible and intangible investments into the future of America. We appreciate your support of materials. More importantly, your generosity will give hope to young people who desire to rise above the challenges of their disabilities or socio-economic status. You can help their dreams of becoming productive citizens come true.
