My students are high school aged young people diagnosed with cognitive disabilities. They receive their public school education in a North Carolina diploma track program called "Occupational Course of Study." OCS is a academic/vocational program that allows students to access an educational curriculum that prepares them for work. One diploma requirement is that they complete 300 hours of school based employment during their time in high school. I serve students who attend a Title I school that is designated as a alternative placement. My students are assigned to attend our school for up to 180 days. These young people often struggle academically in math & reading and feel hopeless about their futures. The bright spot in their day is participating in "hands-on" activities through a school based enterprise. They are excited about studying entrepreneurship and setting up the "Hav-A-Java" Coffee Club.
