I work with an AMAZING group of 4th and 5th grade students all who have special needs. All of these students come from extremely hard working families, living in a neighborhood that is made up primarily of low income/ immigrant families.
My students have shown to be incredibly resilient and caring, in spite of Several of them coming from rough backgrounds.
Some of my student's experience crime outside of school. I am always motivated by how they come to school ready to participate, no matter what happened the day before.
Throughout this year, my students have been doing a novel study on Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone. They have been reading from used books that I purchased several years ago, however these books are now beginning to fall apart after years of use. A few of our books have even come undone from the binding. Nevertheless, these students are still eager to read through Harry's story and are using the theme of Good vs Evil to work towards their IEP goals and their California State Standards for Literature.
All of these students have learning disabilities; they identify with Harry as he himself has to overcome many obstacles throughout the book.
It would mean the world to these students to complete their novel study through new books.
