Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

In my class, Strategies for Academic Success, students spend time learning about leadership, career readiness, and study skills that will help them be successful in high school and beyond. This class, designed specifically for students with Special Education services, also provides extra time for freshmen to improve on their math, reading, and writing skills.

My 9th grade Special Education class is full of wonderful students who need more materials to engage them in their learning.

The fire my students have for learning can only be fueled if provided the appropriate academic resources.

My Project

These books will establish a sense of community in my classroom. My students will work to develop skills in literacy, comprehension, and vocabulary acquisition through reading this powerful story by Jacqueline Woodson. Not only will my students' reading goals be addressed through reading this book, but also the themes of the book will overlap with social emotional learning goals.

My students will enhance their reading skills through exploring themes of immigration, race, forgiveness, bullying, identity, friendship, and family.

Our class will spend time reading these books in small groups, independently, and as a whole group. At the end of the unit, each student will consider who harbors them.
