My students need 20 calligraphy brushes, some ink and red paper, storage cups, and a cleaning bucket to write spring scrolls and do paper cutting for Chinese New Year.

My Students

My students are learning a language that is totally new to them. Most of my students have never been abroad,and it is hard for them to learn about a culture that is so far away from them. It will be a great opportunity for them to explore the culture by doing this project.

My students attend a charter school in Indiana.

The school is poor and cannot provide teachers with many basic office supplies. Most of my students come from families that live in poverty. But they are very interested in learning Chinese and they want to learn more about China and Chinese culture.

My Project

Chinese New Year is coming. To experience the most important holiday in China, my students will do some hands-on activities to celebrate the holiday in a traditional Chinese way. During Chinese New Year, people will hang spring scrolls with blessing words outside their home. They will also stick paper-cutting on the windows to scare off the evil spirit. In this Chinese New Year project, my students will make spring scrolls by writing blessing words in calligraphy. They will also learn to do paper-cutting. In order to carry out this project, my students need paper to write on and to cut and brushes to write with. They will also need some storage cups for ink and a bucket to clean the brushes. By doing these activities, students can not only learn some Chinese art and craft, but also be able to know how Chinese people celebrate their "Christmas". For my students who cannot afford to go to China, this project will be helpful for them to learn the language and culture.

This project will help my students experience the Chinese culture and tradition by carrying out activities themselves.

For students who cannot afford to experience the culture in the target country, it is important for educators to bring the culture to the class. Your donations will help my students to broaden their horizons and learn about different ways to celebrate holidays and learn a language in its cultural context.
