My Students

Once upon a time and happily ever after. These are the opening and closing phrases found so often in fairy tales. Unfortunately, many of my students are unfamiliar with these wonderful tales.

My third grade students have diverse backgrounds and cultures, however, they are unaware of the importance of their diversity.

They have a thirst for knowledge but do not understand the power it possesses. They absorb and retain any and all information I place before them. Our school is similar to many schools in Nevada...we, too, have come upon hard times and our budget continues to be threatened.

My Project

Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters is a fantastic tale of magic, royalty, adventure, and fantasy. By using this cultural fairy tale in my classroom, my students will gain a better understanding of the world around them, learn to compare and contrast the cultures of the world in a safe setting, and appreciate the joys of a Caldecott award-winning picture book. We will read the story, compare it to the traditional version of the tale, identify the elements that make the tale a fairy tale, use the vivid vocabulary in many ways, and identify our favorite parts and explain, using details, why it is our favorite part.

This project will allow my students to explore a different world, time, and culture while remaining comfortably in our classroom.

Our world gets smaller each day...reading and enjoying this fairy tale will help my students appreciate the beauty in it's diversity!
