This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach the most amazing 3rd graders. Our neighborhood school serves students from PK-5 and is located in a very diverse area of our urban city. The students come from many backgrounds and experiences. Many of my students are exposed to trauma on a daily basis, so school is a safe zone for them. We are over 70% free lunch and have many English Language learners. We also educate students with emotion/behavior disorder needs.
My students love to learn math!
They love to laugh, they care for each other, and they love to learn. In addition to the Common Core Standards, we focus on teaching the whole child. We do this by teaching our students to be emotionally literate.
My Project
These math items will support my joyful 3rd graders. In addition to reading, writing, social studies, science, and emotional learning, we learn a lot of math. Over the year, we learn (among others) time, multiplication, fractions, and subtraction. To support my instruction I'm requesting Mastering Multistep Problem Solving Cards, a Fractions & Decimals Hands-On Student Pack, Hands-On Regrouping Kits, Student Gear Clocks, an Elapsed Time Instant Learning Center, and Multiplication Power Pen! Quiz Cards.
My students need math tools they can manipulate, touch, move around, and visualize in order for their math skills to strengthen.
I plan to use these tools in whole group instruction and small group centers. I know these hands-on tools will allow my students to gain those concrete math skills for success in 3rd grade. These skills will then transfer to 4th grade and beyond.
