Hands-On Science for Technical Students

My Students

My students are good kids for whom the school is not easy. Many have not consistently experienced academic success. Some are English language learners, others have special education needs, and many come from at-risk backgrounds. They may have immigrant parents, nontraditional families, or guardians who have not completed school. Several work long hours to help support siblings. Most of my students struggled in school and are reluctant to try again and fail. They are disengaged from the learning process and profess they no longer care. Chronic absenteeism, frequent time in in-school suspension, lack of effort, work refusal, and even sleeping through or disrupting class are common.

But have these students failed at school or have we failed them?

Perhaps we need to reevaluate and teach the way they learn. Technical school students are generally "hands-on." By teaching a way that matches their learning style, we can lead them to academic success. To support that learning style, we need hands-on supplies. As I have switched to a more conducive teaching style, behavior and work completion have improved. Students voluntarily stay after school for remediation. Many are willing to try now; we just need the supplies to continue the successes!

My Project

My students need hydrogen peroxide, a scale, stamp pads and syringes, gold panning equipment, replicas of radioactive materials, and other supplies for hands-on labs. They need to DO to be able to LEARN. They need to touch and feel and manipulate and measure and see the changes in the physical environment. Then they can learn the underlying how and why and the science concepts and mathematical calculations involved. Hands-on labs require supplies though and those purchases add up over time.

Help my students make elephant toothpaste, measure gravity in an elevator, analyze fingerprints and blood spatter to solve a mock crime, use concepts of density to pan for gold, and observe radioactivity in our daily lives.

All of these experiments and more will bring the science concepts alive to my students. When students can see and touch, they understand better and are more interested and motivated to learn.

This list of resources may seem very random, but please rest assured that it is not. I am a veteran science teacher. For the past few years I have been working with consumables I purchased myself or I begged, borrowed, and just short of stole to find supplies that would enable my students to learn. At the same time, I very carefully kept a list of what I would like to use next year to teach this curriculum. Each of these supplies is necessary for a specific lab experience that is tied to a particular science concept and learning objective. If this request is funded, almost everything we need for an effective science class next year will be here, leaving me extra time and energy to devote to my students. Off-beat and creative? Sure. Fun and effective? Absolutely!
