I teach gifted middle school students in a poverty-rich inner city environment. These students have innate intellectual abilities, creativity, and task commitment. They are curious about the world around them and want to excel, in spite of peer pressure that is often to the contrary. I have students of all sexes, races, religions, and ethnic backgrounds, including students for whom English is not the primary language. Many of these students have few opportunities for enrichment, technology, travel or other extra supports at home. Often they are dealing with difficult home situations. Additionally, school has a very tight budget and limited opportunities in comparison to more suburban districts. In spite of all these factors that seem to be conspiring against them, my students are determined to escape the cycle of poverty. As the saying goes, "You can hand a man a fish or you can teach him to fish." My kids are ready to find their own fish of knowledge if I can only find them a pole.
