The students had a blast cutting open and dissecting the pellets, examining and identifying the bones of the various smaller critters and later comparing who found the larger head skeleton! In addition, I showed the students several video's of owl's spitting up the pellets as a natural way of ridding their body of undigestible items. The kids are having a blast in this self-directed learning course. Some kids learn best through lecture, others by reading, and another group prefers to master material through viewing videos. With this format, students can choose the learning modality that is the best fit for them or change it up on different days to experiment or match their mood.\r\n\r\nWhere your supply donations come in is for the final products. Individually or in small groups, students must plan a way to show what they have learned about the topic at hand. Posters and models abound so far, and soon I'm going to encourage them to push the creative boundaries even farther. In any case, they are enjoying their creations and the opportunity to grow their knowledge without the ubiquitous tests all of the time. There are other ways to be smart, and they are on display in this classroom! As we unboxed the materials, a low buzz of excitement spread through the classroom. What is that? Can I play with this? How will we use this doohickey? That apparatus looks fun! When can we start?\r\n\r\nUnfortunately for these excited teens, our light and sound unit will not be until this winter. However, we have already built heightened anticipation for when that day arrives. Students are BEGGING to do physics because it looks like so much FUN!\r\n\r\nWe will be using the light filters to mix colors on the wall. The various noisemakers will start a band. While playing games, students are reinforcing chemistry content while hardly realizing it. They are also strengthening life skills such as perseverance, critical thinking, problem solving, prioritizing, team work, and good sportsmanship. All of these traits will help them throughout their careers and personal lives. It is still early in the year so small groups of students are currently learning the games. As the year progresses, one day a month or so we will put the structured chemistry lessons away and break out the board games. They are also available for days when some students finish early or for free time during study halls.
