Our school serves students from kindergarten to 6th grade in South Jordan, Utah.
My favorite thing about our students is how kind and committed they are, and how seriously they take their education.
We are a largely middle-class school and while we have great parental support in our area, our rigorous curriculum standards demand an unrelenting pace and focus from our students every single day. We have high expectations and, to their credit, our students rise to meet those every single day!
My Project
With the start of the pandemic I purchased an air purifier for the classroom. In this request I am asking for filters to keep it working effectively. Each week I have students comment on how lucky they are to be in a classroom with clean air. Especially when we struggle with air quality, or study the inversion in Science, the topic always turns to the air purifier. I am also requesting a second monitor to help with grading and content creation in the classroom.
Sensory toys and tape can help students stay in the classroom and focus for longer periods.
These past two years have brought a marked increase in anxiety behavior among students in school. These sensory items can filter some of the excess energy in more positive ways, freeing up mental space for learning. I am also asking for consumable materials for our in-class hydroponic garden tower. This allows my students to be able to grow foods in a hands-on way. It lets them connect to science at its best, and see where their food comes from.
