Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend an urban, inner city school, and most families qualify for free or reduced lunches. Participating in a stimulating chemistry class allows them to equally access information that will help them become aware and motivated responsible adults in the near future.
My students thrive in labs to discover natural forces, changes, particles, trends, and reactions.
They love to see new compounds form with a change in temperature or color, or the formation of a new gas or solid. Their joy of learning is evident in their expressions and laughter of triumphs and achievement.
By providing hands-on labs, they spark up from their seats and take on active roles to answer the central questions of the labs.
They are motivated by the unknown, ask very in-depth questions to further their knowledge, and articulate their findings in reports and presentations. Their growth is very rewarding to me.
My Project
The topics in chemistry and physics (forces, reaction rates, movement) are explained well in the textbooks. Providing hands-on experiences with top-notch tools is beyond valuable. Usually, I, or the students bring items we have or purchase, which can be time-consuming and expensive, year after year. These science materials will bring new experiences into their hands and will be used to motivate them to continue their "learn by doing" approach in other areas, in school and in their lives.
Providing meaningful and memorable science labs expands their learning from novel to curiosity, interesting to captivating, and required to value-driven.
I look forward to upping my game and having quality resources available (yearly) will make a tremendous impact.
