Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want to be an astronaut and a scientist! These were the words spoken to me by two of my fifth grade girls after viewing a near total solar eclipse and studying about Earth and our place in the Universe.
I teach 5th grade science in an elementary school located within a large multicultural and multi-language urban district.
Most of my students live at or below poverty level and many speak a language other than English at home. Imagine coming to a new school in a new country where you don't even speak the same language! That is the reality for many of my students.
I want to be able to provide for my students opportunities for hands-on discovery learning experiences that cross language and socioeconomic barriers to ignite their imaginations. I want to instill in them an excitement and passion for learning and seeking knowledge by providing opportunities for science and STEM investigations.
My Project
My students will be studying mixtures and solutions this year. We would love to have the opportunity to allow each student to get hands on with demonstrations and experiments to bring the science to life. For instance, we will demonstrate how different types of mixtures can be separated using a variety of methods including screens, filters, evaporation, and magnetism. We will need to purchase the filters, cups, and other physical materials. We also need a variety of chemicals to mix including citric acid and diatomaceous earth.
Chemistry needs to be hands on to allow students to truly connect with the science.
By supporting this project, you will be helping the next generation of great thinkers experience the joy of exploring the properties of the substances around us. Thank you so much for supporting science education in our classrooms!
