Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is home to 1,700 at-risk students. It is comprised of 98% minority students; 77% of whom are part of the free or reduced lunch program. In 2011, the management of the school was taken over by a charter which has made tremendous progress improving the atmosphere and academics at the school. They have been rebuilding the music program that had completely fallen by the wayside before they took over.

My students deserve guitars that work; functional instruments facilitate success.

Two sections of my Musicianship II class will be working on learning and playing guitar this year.

My Project

This year will be my first year teaching at OCHS. I'll be teaching 2 sections of Musicianship II which will include half a year of studying guitar. This means that around 60 students will be playing these guitars. Though the school has been striving to revive its arts offerings, our fleet of guitars is insufficient in numbers and quality. The parlor guitars that I am requesting have smaller bodies which makes them less cumbersome than a large dreadnought guitar shape and easier to play for a beginner.

These guitars will help us learn better and sound better.

My students shouldn't have to suffer through learning to play on broken instruments.
