My students need 25 guitars for our guitar lab to improve listening skills, increase cooperative learning, and positively influence math and reading outcomes.
I was hired as a replacement guitar teacher. The previous teacher had a grant for guitars but the instruments traveled with him. Every day my students ask "when are we getting more guitars?" I don't have an answer for them
My school is predominately low income, bilingual or non English speakers.
My students are very musical and are eager to learn. I have many students who learned to play guitar last year. They were devastated when they discovered there were no more guitars. My principal is very supportive of the arts but there is no money in the budget to replace the guitars. The school community is also very eager for us to get the program up and running. They recognize the value of music as part of their child's education experience
My Project
Imagine a class of 25 guitar students. Following directions is the first order of business in order to ensure proper instruction. Students will have to learn to cooperate with each other as well as with the teacher. Students will learn to read and play music. Those with previous experience will build upon their skills and be able to play together in small ensembles. Students will be asked to improvise and compose their own music to interpret stories or important events. They will listen to each other and discuss selected components of their performance. Students will be able to identify simple song form (AB, ABA) through listening, reading and performance. And most of all students will learn the joy of making music for themselves.
Donations to my project will enable me to teach what I expected to teach, not just general music, theory, and music history.
It will enable my students to expand the places where music occurs in their lives. It will allow them the opportunity to be creative and also to discriminate between styles and genres.
