Guitars, Dulcimers and Making Music

My students need 20 sets of replacement strings for the guitars and dulcimers in my classroom. The instruments are in good shape but the strings are over twenty years old, discoloring fingers and breaking easily.

I am the music specialist in an elementary school of 900 students. We are in a high-need community. I am very proud of the students in my school because they apply themselves and consistently outperform other students who are also impoverished.

One reason they achieve in spite of the economic limitations of their families is because our staff makes sure they have many interesting experiences, not just endless boring drills for skills. I want to teach a guitar unit and connect their musical skills training with American history and the development of American music.

By replacing the strings, we will be able to use the instruments in class. Most of the students do not have access to private teachers, so their public school music instruction is very important to them. This project will benefit the students by granting them access to an instrument that their parents may not be able to provide.

You will make it possible for children in grades 2-5 to discover hidden musical abilities, and also gain the skills needed to provide entertainment in a home or community setting that has been the source of many unique American musical styles,with the guitar being a fundamental instrument.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
