My Students

Located in a very diverse neighborhood, our school is a Title I school (a school with a large concentration of low-income students), with over 60% of English Language Learners. On top of learning a new language (which requires a lot of time and effort), students are required to engage in rigorous academic work on a daily basis.

Students face many challenges inside and outside of the classroom and they need all the support they can get!

The students' parents are also English Language Learners and they rely on their children for translation. Some parents have to work out of state in order to provide for their children. These students have a lot of responsibilities other students might not have, and despite the challenges, the students come to school every day, excited to learn.

My Project

I currently teach 5 to 6 students at a time around a small round table in two different classrooms. It makes for a crowded area where students and their supplies barely fit, and where focus is therefore a challenge.

Replacing the round tables with these specialty half-moon tables will enable students to have more space--and a comfortable setting is known for being conducive to learning.

These tables will be used specifically for guided reading and advanced literacy activities my English Language Learners need in order to improve their academic skills. As an English as a New Language teacher, I use a lot of literacy materials such as visuals, graphic organizers, and anchor charts, which will be better displayed on a half-moon table. I also try to make my lesson more engaging by using a variety of supports for students, such as dry erase boards. These half-moon tables will allow me to stick dry-erase circles that students will write on, directly on the table.
