Guided Reading Instruction for English Language Learners in Alaska

My Students

My school is located in Anchorage, Alaska and we have a very diverse student population. My students speak Hmong, Tagalog, Lao, Spanish, Urdu and Yupik in addition to other languages.

Many of my students live in a local trailer park, receive free breakfast and lunch at school and often do not have a rich literacy environment at home.

Their parents may or may not speak English or be able to read with them in English. They are also the sweetest, kindest kids I know and they make me love coming to school each day! These children work very hard and our school is a safe, nurturing place for them. I want to give them every opportunity to become literate in English.

My Project

My school just lost Title I funding this year--not because our student population became less needy, but because the funding criteria changed. This makes serving our students more challenging than ever! My 3rd grade students need small group guided reading experience so they can learn to believe in themselves as readers. It's vital to get my students reading in school as much as possible because many of them don't get literacy practice at home. They need books they can read at an instructional level but do not overwhelm with unfamiliar vocabulary. The Rigby PM readers are perfect for English Language Learners because they offer engaging stories with supportive decoding clues, controlled introduction of sight words and consistent language structures--so important for children learning English! I've been teaching for over 20 years and have used these materials in other school districts, but in my current school in Alaska, we have a very limited supply of Rigby PM books. I received some lower level Rigby books from my first DonorsChoose project this past spring and I'm happy to say that the kids loved them and now they need some harder text levels! Ideally, my students should be reading 2-3 new guided reading books a week. Your help is greatly appreciated!
