My Project

Play is an important part of early childhood. It is how young children explore, learn, and make sense of the world around them. My young students learn best when they are moving, talking, creating, and interacting with each other in meaningful ways.

With the materials in this project, my students will build literacy and math skills through hands-on play.

Games like hopscotch and bean bag toss will give them opportunities to practice counting, number recognition, and sequencing. Soccer, tetherball, and football activities will naturally incorporate concepts like taking turns, keeping score, and understanding more and less. Even simple movements like jumping, tossing, and running help strengthen the brain’s ability to process patterns and problem-solve.

Literacy skills will also come to life outdoors. With sidewalk chalk, students can write letters, sight words, and simple sentences while expressing their creativity. Some may choose to draw and tell stories through pictures, while others practice spelling or create their own games using words. The walkie talkies will encourage communication, turn-taking in conversations, and listening skills, while also sparking imaginative play. The megaphone will not only help call students back (because let’s be honest, they get very into their games), but will also be used for student-led directions, storytelling, and sharing ideas.

The parachute activities will support both social and language development as students work together, follow directions, and use positional words like up, down, fast, and slow. These shared experiences help build vocabulary while strengthening teamwork and cooperation.

This project will create a space where learning feels joyful, active, and meaningful. Instead of sitting still and completing worksheets, students will be developing math and literacy skills through movement, creativity, and play. These are the moments that build confidence, connection, and a true love for learning.
