My Project

I teach a STEM specials class once a week for grades K-2 and I also teach a writing class for one second and one first-grade class.

After participating in a Place-Based Learning workshop and fellowship, I have gotten permission to focus my 1st and 2nd-grade writing class on learning about plants, meeting the plant science standards, and learning about native plants in Michigan.

My students will be doing research on plants and pollinators, and making a plan to improve our pollinator garden with native plants that we started planting last year in front of our school.

Besides researching plants, students will need to see the life cycle of plants. The Wisconsin Fast Plants give students the chance to see the life cycle in a much shorter period of time. Students will be keeping a journal of their plant observations. Students will also make a model to pollinate their plants which is a science standard.

Students will be writing letters to administrators with their suggestions and to get permission to plant. In the spring, students will use gloves to weed native plants in our garden.
