Growing Confidence, Building Stronger Relationships

Help me give my students Black Beautiful and Magical self-love journals, culturally affirming books, SEL games, and creative materials to build self-esteem, strengthen communication skills, manage big emotions, and develop healthier peer relationships.

My Project

For the past five years, I have had the privilege of watching many of my students grow through elementary school. As their school counselor, I have come to know their personalities, strengths, and unique needs. They are creative, energetic, expressive, and full of potential, but I have also seen how struggles with self-esteem, managing big emotions, communication, and peer conflict can affect their relationships and their school experience. This year, I want to reach them early through small-group counseling that gives them a safe place to build confidence, learn from one another, and practice healthier ways to express themselves.

These materials will help my students see their value, find their voices, and build healthier relationships with themselves and one another.

The Black Beautiful and Magical self-love journals will provide guided prompts for exploring strengths, identity, feelings, and self-worth, while Sulwe and Big will help begin meaningful conversations about self-image, belonging, and accepting differences. The SEL game will allow students to practice communication and social skills in an engaging way. Writing paper, markers, timers, stickers, and creative materials will support reflection, emotional regulation, self-expression, and hands-on activities that make students want to participate.

My goal is for students to leave these groups with more than completed activities. I want them to recognize their strengths, communicate their feelings without tearing one another down, work through disagreements in healthier ways, and feel more confident about who they are. With engaging materials and consistent support, students will have opportunities to practice these skills together and carry them into their classrooms, friendships, and everyday lives.
